TETRA RY

Teknillinen Tapahtumarakentajaseura TETRA ry was established in Lappeenranta in January 2017. The founding members and the first board of directors were comprised of students in industrial engineering and management: Jeremias Skyttä as the chairman, Aleksi Jeskanen as the vice chairman, Stiina Luoma as the secretary, Atte Jantunen as the treasurer, Antti Sinkkonen as the graphic designer, and Erno Sjöblom as the public relations officer.

The idea for the association stemmed from a desire to introduce the concept of the Karjalan Appro to Lappeenranta’s autumn student event calendar. The founding members questioned why event tickets weren’t being sold electronically in Lappeenranta and why the proceeds weren’t being used for charitable purposes. They also noted the relatively small scale of local “appro” events. They aimed to address these issues permanently, putting Lappeenranta on the map for students, eliminating long queues for ticket sales, and allocating funds for good causes. With this in mind, Tetra Ry was established, and the Karjalan Appro was born.

The Karjalan Appro has since grown into one of the largest student events in Lappeenranta, and the concept is continually developed to make it even more impressive and grandiose each year.

The first Karjalan Appro was organized with the proceeds from a €30 membership fee, in collaboration with Bailataan.fi (now Kide.app). Over 1300 enthusiastic participants attended the inaugural event. Profits from the event were donated to the children’s ward at the South Karelia Central Hospital in the form of various toys, supplies, and furniture.

Today, the tradition of charity continues, with beneficiaries including the Saimaa Ringed Seals, the Lappeenranta Me-House, students’ mental health initiatives, and new student organizations.

The association has always sought to be positive and influential agents of change in the local student community. Its driving forces have been strong event organization skills, entrepreneurship, a quest for change, and a mindset of continuous improvement. Tetra’s events are often surprising and unexpected! The strong sense of camaraderie is evident as members proudly flaunt their legendary red suspenders around town.

Since then, Tetra Ry and the Karjalan Appro have grown significantly and have firmly established themselves in Lappeenranta’s student culture. Tetra Ry’s event repertoire has expanded to include events such as Yard Games, Movie Nights, and crafting workshops for seal-friendly traps.
